Die Geschichte der Philosophischen Anthropologie beginnt 1928 mit einem Doppelschlag: Zeitgleich erscheinen Max Schelers "Die Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos" und Helmuth Plessners "Die Stufen des Organischen und der Mensch".
Bis heute wird kontrovers diskutiert, inwiefern sich beide Ansätze ergänzen bzw. in Spannung zueinander stehen. Auf der einen Seite hat das durch die Lebenswissenschaften neu gestellte Problem einer philosophischen Biologie die bei beiden Autoren zentrale Idee der psycho-physischen Indifferenz des Lebendigen in den Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit gerückt.
Auf der anderen Seite stellt sich immer noch die Frage, in welchem Verhältnis Philosophische Anthropologie und Metaphysik stehen: Hier gibt es vor allem in Hinblick auf die Konzeption des Geistes Differenzen, deren Bedeutung es herauszuarbeiten gilt. 
Neben zahlreichen Beiträgen zu diesen Fragestellungen enthält der Band ein bislang unveröffentlichtes Manuskript Max Schelers: "Das Problem der Struktur des Menschen und die sog[enannten] ‚psychophysischen Theorien’", das Anfang der 20er Jahre entstanden ist.

As a full professor of Philosophical Anthropology and Its History at the Rotterdam School of Philosophy of Erasmus University  Rotterdam I have supervised 33 PhD students until August 2022. Er waart een spook door Europa en omstreken – het spook van het populisme. Het multiculturalisme is failliet verklaard, de rechtsstaat en parlementaire democratie staan onder druk, de Europese Unie kraakt in haar voegen. Donald Trump heeft de vs in de populistische vaart der volkeren opgestuwd en Marine Le Pen, Viktor Orbán, Bart De Wever en onze eigen Geert Wilders ruiken de macht. Er heerst paniek in de Polder.

Brandpunt van de filosofische verkenningen in dit boek is het begrip ontwikkeling, en wel de ontwikkeling van de mens, zowel individueel als in maatschappelijk en cultureel verband. Het gaat hier niet om een vooruitgangsgeloof, maar om het kritisch toetsen van vooronderstellingen die met het idee van menselijke ontwikkeling zijn Verbünden.

Deze vooronderstellingen kunnen tot drie verschil-lende modellen worden herleid, die tegenover elkaar worden afgewogen. Het model dat menselijke ontwikkeling opvat als een verhaal, geeft aanleiding nader in te gaan op de problematische verhouding van het algemene versus het persoonlijke, zoals die in de filosofische stromin-gen van structuralisme en hermeneutiek tot uiting komt. Een aanzet tot een vruchtbare synthese wordt gegeven.

Vervolgens komen een aantal specifieke theorieen van ontwikkeling aan de orde, waarbij eerst wordt ingegaan op de intellectuele, sociale, morele en esthetische ontwikkeling van het individu, daarna ook op de maat-schappijontwikkeling en collectieve vormen zoals die in de kunst tot uiting komen.

Apart wordt aandacht besteed aan de wijze waarop ontwikkelingsclaims gerechtvaardigd kunnen worden. Het boek besluit met een beschouwing over de betekenis van deze ideeen voor de opvoeding en opvoedingstheorie.

Abstract

Conceptual metaphors have an important cognitive function; they not only help us capture unknown or elusive things in concepts but also nudge our actions. If metaphors get materialized they can even forcefully direct human behavior. Whereas the conceptual metaphor MAN IS A MACHINE nudges medical research, when an mechanical heart is implanted in a human body, it becomes a behavior enforcing material metaphor. At least partly, a human being then actually becomes a machine. In this chapter it is argued that in the information society the database not only acts as a conceptual metaphor (MAN IS A DATABASE), but implemented in e-commerce and biopolitics, it becomes a material metaphor which threatens to reduce human beings to algorithmically predictable entities without freedom and responsibility.

Met ICT en het internet heeft de werkeiixkheid zoals we die kennen een nieuwe dimensie erbij gekregen, Deze dimensie Staat los van ruimte en tijd, wordt gekenmerkt door horizontale sociale verhoudingen en heeft een virtueel karakter. Deels ontwikkelt de virtuele wereld zieh los van de fysieke wereld, maar er zijn ook interferenties tussen beide werelden. NAPSTER en vergeliikbare 'ruilbeurzen' hebben de muziekmarkt definitief veranderd, de Consumen-tenbond moblliseerf leden en Sympathisanten längs virtuele weg en Albert Heijn biedt op het internet recepten aan, inclusief de mogelijkheid om automatisch de boodschappenlijst te maken en de vereiste ingredienten te bestellen.

De virtuele wereld laat ook het openbaar bestuur niet onberoerd. Enkele jaren geleden is daarom een onderzoeksgroep gevormd van ministeries, universiteiten en adviesbureaus. De oorspronkelijke vraagstelling van net onderzoeksprogramma ('Wat doet het openbaar bestuur met het internet?') is steeas minder interessant en prikkelend geworden. Geleidelijk is het accent in het programma verschoven naar de vraag: 'Wat doet het internet met het openbaar bestuur?'

De voorwerpen in dit koffertje getuigen van deze ontwikkeling. Het project ICT de Baas? behelst een filosofische analyse van en kwalitatief-empirisch onderzoek naar de relatie tussen menselijke autonomie, netwerktechnologieën en sturing. Daarbij richt het onderzoek zich zowel op de invloed van netwerktechnologieën op de autonomie van de overheid en van de burger als op de stuurbaarheid van technologische ontwikkelingen. Het onderzoek sluit daarmee aan bij de vraagstelling van het door BZK geplande onderzoeksprogramma Het individu de baas.

Jos de Mul. Horizons of Hermeneutics: Intercultural Hermeneutics in a Globalizing World.  Frontiers of Philosophy in China.Vol. 6, No. 4 (2011), 628-655.

Abstract  Starting from the often-used metaphor of the “horizon of experience” this article discusses three different types of intercultural hermeneutics, which respectively conceive hermeneutic interpretation as a widening of horizons, a fusion of horizons, and a dissemination of horizons. It is argued that these subsequent stages in the history of hermeneutics have their origin in—but are not fully restricted to—respectively premodern, modern and postmodern stages of globalization. Taking some striking moments of the encounter between Western and Chinese language and philosophy as example, the particular merits and flaws of these three types of hermeneutics are being discussed. The claim defended is that although these different types of hermeneutics are mutually exclusive from a theoretical point of view, as interpreting beings in the current era we depend on each of these distinct hermeneutic practices and cannot avoid living on them simultaneously.

Gimme Shelter. Global discourses in aesthetics contains a series of reflections on the impact of globalization on the arts and the aesthetic reflection on the arts. The authors – fifteen distinguished  aestheticians from all over the world -   discuss a variety of aesthetic questions brought forth by the aforementioned process of globalization. How do artistic practices and aesthetic experiences change in response to these developments? How should we articulate these changes on the theoretical level? When reflections on the significance of art and aesthetic experiences can no longer pretend to be universal, is it still possible to lay claim to  a wider validity than merely that of one’s own particular culture? What type of vocabulary allows for mutual – dialogical or even polylogical – exchanges and understandings when different traditions meet, without obliterating local differences? Is there a possibility for a creative re-description of globalization? And is there a meaning of ‘the global’ that cannot be reduced to universalism and unification? Can we seek shelter in a legitimate way?

The development and global dissemination of computers - from the mainframe computers in the middle of the 20^th century up to the smart phones that enable us to be online everywhere at any time - has an enormous impact on virtually every domain in human life, including art and literature. In the past decades, we have witnessed the emergence of different kinds of new media, that – among many other things – also have given birth to new art forms and genres, such as computer animations, hypertext, and interactive netart. All these new (that is: computer-mediated) media can be called “hypermedia”, because they share two fundamental characteristics: they are media that are both multimedial and non-linear.

In this contribution I will discuss the impact of hypermedia on literary theory and criticism. More particularly, the question I will focus on in my lecture is: how to write about hypermedia? In what ways do hypermedia affect literary theory and literary criticism. However, when writing about hypermedia, literature can only be a point of departure of our examination. After all, hypermedia are media that absorb and thereby re-mediate the other “old media”, literature included.[1] And this, as I will argue, also applies to literary theory and literary criticism, which at least partly is going to be transformed into hypermedial criticism.

Friedrich Schelling (1755-1854) wordt met recht beschouwd als de meest representatieve filosoof van de Duitse roman­tiek. Dat geldt in het bijzonder voor zijn filosofie van de kunst, die hij tussen 1800 en 1807 in verschillende geschrif­ten heeft ontwikkeld. Hoewel veel van zijn ideeën ook, en vaak zelfs al eerder, te vinden zijn in het werk van andere romantici, zoals de gebroeders Schlegel en Novalis, komt Schelling de eer toe deze vaak fragmentarische ideeën tot een samenhangende kunstfilosofie te hebben samenge­smeed.

Schellings kunstfilosofie is in de eerste plaats een metafysi­ca van de kunst. De kunst vormt voor Schelling het sluitstuk van de filosofie, omdat uitsluitend zij in staat is het Absolute, opgevat als de oorspronkelijke eenheid van natuur en geest, op adequate wijze tot uitdrukking te brengen. De kunst is voor Schelling 'het enig ware en eeuwige organon van de filosofie' en is om die reden tenminste gelijkwaardig aan de filosofie. Daarmee staat Schelling aan het begin van een 'esthetische' traditie in de (post)moderne filosofie die via Nietzsche, Heideggêr en Derrida tot op heden zijn sporen trekt.

De computer en de daarop gebaseerde informatie- en communicatietechno- logieën (ICT) hebben het aanzien van de wereld ingrijpend veranderd. Niet alleen  letterlijk  –  in  enkele  decennia  tijds  zijn  miljoenen  computers  onze leefwereld binnengedrongen –, maar ook vanwege hun diepgaande invloed op onze samenleving en cultuur, als ook op de wijze waarop we de wereld en onszelf beschouwen.

Filosofie in Cyberspace handelt over de fascinerende filosofische vragen die ‘de informatisering van het wereldbeeld’ oproept. In de inleiding wordt een overzicht  geboden  van  de  ‘Filosofie  van  de  informatie-  en  communicatie- technologie’. Daarbij wordt ingegaan op de verschillende manieren waarop deze nieuwe technologieën ons mens- en wereldbeeld beïnvloeden en op de vraag  in  hoeverre  wij  technologische  ontwikkelingen  kunnen  sturen.  Het eerste deel van het boek gaat over de  ethische en de politieke vragen die wor- den opgeroepen door de mondiale informatiemaatschappij. Daarbij gaan de auteurs  in op thema’s als privacy, digitale tweedeling, en de betekenis van het Internet voor de democratie. Ook wordt de ICT vanuit een intercultureel perspectief geanalyseerd. Het tweede deel handelt over de culturele beteke- nis  van  de  ‘informatierevolutie’.  Daarbij  komen  onder  meer  de  betekenis van de ICT voor de literatuur en de film aan de orde, waarbij ook wordt inge- gaan  op  de  overeenkomsten  en  verschillen  tussen  de  digitale  cultuur,  de schriftcultuur  en  de  orale  cultuur.  Het  derde  deel  behandelt  de  ICT  vanuit een antropologisch perspectief.  Kan de mens als een computer worden be- schouwd?  Welke invloed hebben biometrische technologieën op ons beeld van  de  menselijke  identiteit?    In  het  vierde  deel  wordt  ten  slotte  de  vraag gesteld  of  de  ICT  de  menselijke  levensvorm  niet  op  een  radicale  wijze  zal transformeren. Is het mogelijk dat mens en computer ooit zullen versmel- ten tot een nieuwe levensvorm en zo ja, moeten wij dat nastreven?

Abstract

Wikipedia, the crowd-sourced, hypermedial encyclopedia, available in more  than  290 languages and  consisting  of  no  less  than  40 million  lemmas,  is  often  hailed  as  a  successful  example  of  the ʻwisdom of  the  crowdsʼ.  However,  critics not only  point  at  the  lack  of  accuracy  and  reliability, uneven coverage of topics, and the poor quality of writing, but also at the under-representation of women and non-white ethnicities. Moreover, some critics regard Wikipedia as an example of the development of  a  hive  mind,  as  we  find  it  in  social insects, whose  ʻmindʼ rather than being a property of individuals is a ʻsocial phenomenonʼ, as it has to be located in the colony rather than in the individual bees. In this article an attempt is made to throw some light on this controversy by analyzing Wikipedia  from  the  perspective  of  the  cognitive  evolution  of  mankind.  Connecting  to Origins  of  the  Modern  Mind(1991) of neuropsychologist Merlin Donald, in which three stages in the cognitive evolution -  characterized by a  mimetic, an linguistic, and an external symbolic cognition  respectively  -  are  distinguished,  it  is  argued  that  the  development  of  the  internet,  and crowd-sourced  projects  like  Wikipedia  in  particular,  can be understood as a fourth, computer- mediated form of cognition. If we survey the cognitive evolution of hominids and the role played in this evolution by cultural and technical artefacts like writing, printing press, computers, and internet, we witness a process of increasing integration of individual minds. With outsourcing and virtualization  of  the  products  and  processes  of  thinking  to  external  memories,  and  the  fast development of implanted computer interfaces, we appear to be at the edge of the materialization of the  hive  mind  in a  ʻglobal brainʼ.  The article ends  with  some  speculative  predictions about the future of human cognition.

One of the most striking developments in the history of the sciences over the past fifty years has been the gradual moving towards each other of biology and computer science and their increasing tendency to overlap. Two things may be held responsible for that. The first is the tempestuous development of molecular biology which followed the first adequate description, in 1953, of the structure of the double helix of the DNA, the carrier of hereditary information. Biologists therefore became increasingly interested in computer science, the science which focuses, among other things, on the question what information really is and how it is encoded and transferred. No less important was that it would have been impossible to sequence and decipher the human genome without the use of ever stronger computers. This resulted in a fundamental digitalization of biology. This phenomenon is particularly visible in molecular biology, where DNA-research increasingly moves from the analogical world of biology to the digital world of the computer.[1]

Het atelier van Eric Claus in Broek-in-Waterland nodigt uit tot langdurig verwijlen. Het uit twee verdiepingen bestaande atelier herbergt naast talloze schetsen, ontwerpen, boeken en catalogi  vele tientallen beelden, beeldjes, penningen en munten. Soms gaat het om zelfstandige werken, vaak maken ze deel uit van omvangrijke, in de loop van meerdere jaren ontstane series, zoals de reeks beelden die geïnspireerd is door de commedia dell'arte. Wat als eerste opvalt bij de rondgang door het atelier is het ambachtelijke meesterschap waarmee Claus de speelse, trefzekere vormen en de rijke, tot aanraking verleidende textuur van zijn penningen en sculpturen uit het brons tevoorschijn roept. Een bezoek aan het atelier van de kunstenaar is om die reden in de eerste plaats een feest voor de zintuigen. Maar het werk van Claus spreekt niet alleen tot de zintuigen. Hoewel de liefde van beeldhouwer voor zijn materiaal onmiskenbaar is, wordt zijn werk evenzeer gekenmerkt door een rijkdom aan ideeën. Dat komt al tot uitdrukking in de keuze van de onderwerpen. Hoewel de figuren in de commedia dell’arte ieder voor zich een onmiskenbare individualiteit bezitten, staan ze niet louter op zich zelf, maar verwijzen ze naar de archetypische karakters uit deze oude theatertraditie en daar doorheen naar de vis comicavan het menselijk bestaan. De tegenstelling tussen de materiële vorm en de geestelijke inhoud verleent Claus’ sculpturen een esthetische spanning, die we met een uitdrukking van de presocratische filosoof Herakleitos zouden kunnen aanduiden als een strijdige harmonie. En het is mede dankzij deze strijdige harmonie dat de beelden van Claus steeds opnieuw de aandacht trekken en tot interpretatie uitnodigen.

In de reeks Eenentwintig filosofen van de twintigste eeuw, die in dit boek wordt gedocumenteerd, lijkt Claus te onderzoeken hoe ver hij deze voor zijn werk kenmerkende spanning kan opvoeren. Terwijl hij zich met de serie portretpenningen van beroemde twintigste-eeuwse filosofen nog op een voor een beeldhouwer vertrouwd terrein beweegt, onderneemt hij met de bijbehorende sculpturen een poging het gedachtengoed van de op de penningen afgebeelde denkers te verbeelden. Dat mag een ware tour de force genoemd worden, omdat weinig zaken zo ver af lijken te staan van de massieve stoffelijkheid van de sculptuur als het abstracte, immateriële gedachtengoed van de filosoof. Dat de kunstenaar Claus er in deze reeks toch zo goed in slaagt de complexe denkwereld van de eenentwintig filosofen in beelden te vangen, getuigt van zijn affiniteit met de wereld van de filosofie.
