De biologie heeft grote invloed op het mensbeeld. Na Darwin overheerste een visie waarin al wat leefde gezien werd als uitkomst van evolutionaire processen. Bioloog Richard Dawkins bracht de mens terug tot een voertuig van zelfzuchtige genen. Dick Swaab reduceert de essentie van de mens tot processen in het brein. Komen we zo dichter bij een antwoord op wat de mens is?
Volgens filosoof prof. dr. Jos de Mul zijn zulke reductionistische benaderingen van de mens problematisch. Niet alleen worden daarin typisch menselijke eigenschappen ‘wegverklaard’, maar ze impliceren ook een nihilistische moraal. Oxford bioloog Denis Noble stelt een alternatieve benadering van het leven voor. De Mul reflecteert hierop en laat zien dat deze meer recht doet aan de veelzijdigheid van het menselijk leven.
