In zijn lezing zal De Mul spreken over robotica, neurowetenschappen en biotechnologie en de impact op ons zelfbegrip en dagelijks leven. Wat te denken van de Japanse humanoïde robot Miim die kan dansen, zingen en kleding showen op de catwalk? Of neem het experiment van de Amerikaanse neurowetenschapper Miguel Nicolelis die elektroden in de hersenen van een resusaapje heeft aangebracht. Terwijl de evolutie ooit bestond uit natuurlijke selectie, gaan we naar het tijdperk van kunstmatige selectie. Mogen we hiermee planten, dieren en mensen ‘verbeteren’? Zijn wij, ‘de eeuwig toekomstigen’ volgens Nietzsche, onderweg naar de Homo sapiens 3.0?

Vanuit Amsterdam: God helemaal ingehaald, en onderweg naar Homo Sapiens 3.0. Of door robots uitgeroeid? Als de mens zijn evolutionaire voortgang wil doorzetten, zal hij niet kunnen stilstaan bij wat hij nu is: de Homo Sapiens Sapiens 2.3. Kunstmatig is hij van nature: zonder de door hem ontworpen cultuur en techniek is zijn vliegensvlug toenemende complexiteit onhoudbaar. Filosoof Jos de Mul, die gisteravond samen met andere goden van de filosofie als Peter Sloterdijk, Martha Nussbaum en Benjamin Barber optrad op de G8 van de Filosofie, onthult drie toekomstscenario's voor de mens: extrahumanisme, transhumanisme, en posthumanisme. Om hem met de voeten op de grond te houden, zit Pim Haselager mee aan tafel. Hij is specialist Artificiële Intelligentie, volop ondergedompeld in het robotontwerp aan het Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour. Radboud University Nijmegen. Robots moeten zo worden geprogrammeerd, dat ze ook aanzichzelf kunnen twijfelen!

Hoofdgast: Jos de Mul. pril is de Maand van de Filosofie Mens en techniek staan dit jaar centraal. Het is alleen de vraag of de grens tussen die twee nog wel zo scherp getrokken kan worden; de mens wordt steeds meer machine en machines worden steeds menselijker. Jos de Mul is filosoof en schrijver van het essay voor de maand van de filosofie Kunstmatig van nature. Onderweg naar Homo sapiens 3.0. Hij is hoogleraar wijsgerige antropologie aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam en publiceert regelmatig essays in Trouw, NRC Handelsblad en de Volkskrant. In Kunstmatig van nature neemt De Mul een aantal actuele ‘kunstmatigheden’ onder de loep. Wat zijn de gevolgen ervan voor ons dagelijks leven en zelfbegrip? Hij zet de boel op scherp en stelt de prangende vraag: worden wij de eerste soort op aarde die zijn eigen evolutionaire opvolger gaat scheppen.

© Jos de Mul

Jos de Mul studied philosophy, art history and social sciences at the universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht and Nijmegen (The Netherlands).  At present he is full professor Philosophy of Man and Culture at the Faculty of Philosophy, Erasmus University Rotterdam. He has also taught at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, 2007-2008), Fudan University (Shanghai, 2008), and Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto, 2016). In 2012 he became a visiting fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA.  From 2005 to 2011 he was Vice-President of the Helmuth Plessner Gesellschaft, and from 2007 to 2010 President of the International Association for Aesthetics.

His research is on the interface of philosophical anthropology, philosophy of technology, aesthetics, and history of 19th and 20th century German philosophy. He has published more than 20 books and more than 220 scientific articles and book contributions. His book publications include: Romantic Desire in (Post)Modern Art and Philosophy (State University of New York Press, 1999) , The Tragedy of Finitude. Dilthey's Hermeneutics of Life (Yale University Press, 2004, 2010), Cyberspace Odyssey. Towards a Virtual Ontology and Anthropology (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010), and Destiny Domesticated. The Rebirth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Technology (State University of New York Press, 2014).
