Jos de Mul, Op weg naar het beloofde land! Pim Fortuyn en het politieke messianisme. 10de Rotterdamlezing. Rotterdam, 2 mei 2012.

Mevrouw de loco-burgemeester, meneer de rector, geachte aanwezigen,

Op zondag 6 mei a.s. herdenken wij dat Pim Fortuyn tien jaar geleden op brute wijze door milieuactivist Volkert van der Graaf werd vermoord, een voor Nederlandse begrippen ongehoorde daad van politiek geweld. Vriend en vijand zijn het er over eens dat de ‘Fortuyn-revolte’ de Nederlandse politiek diepgaand, en wellicht blijvend, heeft beïnvloed. Over de vraag wat die invloed precies is geweest en hoe we die dienen te waarderen, lopen de meningen echter sterk uiteen. Is het ‘gedachtegoed van Pim’ vooral gelegen in de inhoudelijke thema’s die hij agendeerde: immigratie en integratie, Nederlandse identiteit, islamisering, de kloof tussen politiek en burgers, en tussen media en burgers? Die stelling is bijvoorbeeld vijf jaar geleden verdedigd door Wim Couwenberg in zijn terugblik op de Fortuyn-revolte, waarbij hij aantekende dat dit politiek programma, ondanks de demonisering die Fortuyn ten deel viel, na diens dood van links tot rechts is overgenomen. In zijn onlangs gepubliceerde boek 10 jaar zonder Pim plaatst Joost Eerdmans vraagtekens bij die stelling. Volgens hem zijn Fortuyns islamkritiek en kritiek op het gebrek aan openheid in de politiek – zie het schimmenspel rond de benoeming van de nieuwe vicepresident van de Raad van State – nog steeds taboe en heeft de gevestigde politiek zich ook weinig aangetrokken van Fortuyns kritiek op de schaalvergroting in onderwijs en gezondheidszorg. Daarbij komt, naar mijn mening, dat Fortuyn weliswaar een scherp criticus was van de ‘Puinhopen van Paars’, maar in zijn boeken Aan het Volk van Nederland (1992) en De overheid als ondernemer (1993), uiteindelijk uit hetzelfde neoliberale vaatje tapte als Paars.

The nation state, imagined as a formation encompassing a culturally unified people, is now straining under the challenges of globalization and the revolution in communication technology. This conference will consider the dynamic changes that are currently taking place with respect to cultural and religious diversity as a result of the explosion in communication technologies, address the conflicts they give rise to, and discuss the ramifications for both law and politics.

Two views on the impact of communication and information technology dominate the scholarship: one in which communication leads to the emergence of a global community and an interconnected global culture; and a second in which it leads to an archipelago of communities that do not necessarily converge with the boundaries nation states, i.e. to a cultural Balkanization of the world across national borders.

This conference will also address a third alternative. Instead of presenting the implications of the networked information and communication infrastructure in the opposing metaphors of a global community or a global archipelago, one can also argue for a normative understanding of what is at stake. Instead of endorsing either utopian notions of global community or dystopian fears of an Internet with walled gardens, one can vouch for an internet that allows for interconnectivity without accepting the increased personalization that leads to unprecedented surveillance and social sorting in both the private and the public sphere.

We hope this conference will be a stimulating gathering of scholars from different disciplines and increase our understanding of the legal and political implications of globalization and communication technology for national and cultural identity.

Met de computer en het internet zijn we beland in het tijdvak waarin het kunstwerk vooral wordt beoordeeld op zijn manipulatiewaarde. Jos de Mul zal aan de hand van Mega Mona Lisa en Geert Muls multimediale werk W4 (Who, What, When, Where) stilstaan bij de hedendaagse kunstprosumer (kunstmaker en kunstproducent) en de terugkeer (met een twist) van het aura in de kunstervaring.
